My Sporting Heroes
Part One — Tennis
As well as my passion for music and the cinema, my other passion is sport. So not mentioning any names here, but any non-lovers of sport can switch channels now.
My two favourite sports have always been football and tennis, but I will take an interest in most sporting activity and my wife will often catch me watching obscure sports out of curiosity and I will always take in the darts over the festive period.
There have been so many sports icons that I have admired over the years, so I am going to split them into parts (Tennis, Football, and Other Sporting genres).
As we have just witnessed another Wimbledon, I will start with Tennis. As much as I wanted to be a rock star, actor, and footballer as a kid, I would have loved the arena of tennis battling my wits against a player on the other side of the net surrounded by a passionate crowd.
Although Andy Murray broke the mould, tennis still seems to be elitist in the UK. It is changing slowly but until we open it up to everyone and ensure parents are not thwarted by costs and snobbery, we will not get more hungry and competitive players like Murray.
We always try to get tickets to Wimbledon each year and just like any other sport, watching it live is amazing. The courts look so small compared to television…
