Of all the going native films in mainstream Hollywood, this is one of the most satisfying, working as an adventure story, a romance, a love letter to diplomacy, and a well-intended corrective to Hollywood’s less than stellar treatment of Native Americans in westerns. John Barry’s magnificent score is a perfect compliment to the drama.
