On Monday, my wife and a group of friends will embark on our final European Road Trip. We have always scheduled this around football tournaments and have experienced cultural life in Poland (Poznań and Wrocław), France (Lille and Lyon), and indeed Germany twice before (Berlin and Dusseldorf). The only one we had booked but sadly missed out on was Bilbao, Spain in 2020 due to a certain pandemic. It was a major disappointment for me because of my love for the country.

The aim of these trips is to drink too much beer, watch too much football, talk too much nonsense about football and importantly avoid England fans. In terms of the latter, we have been very lucky not to be in any venue where England fans have descended in mass. And this trip is no exception.

In Poland, we did encounter the Irish and the Croatians which was an experience but nearly all good fun with no trouble whatsoever.

The only close shave was when one of my friends decided to wear an Italian shirt in a bar full of Croatians when they were playing Italy that day. Believe me, that shirt was not on for long as a very big Croatian lifted it off him in one go and threw it across the other side of the bar. However, it was all in good spirits as I rescued it back…
