Fantastic article Simon. The fact that I saw this wonderful film four times at the cinema the year it was released is a testament to how highly I value it. I own the 4 hour version and totally agree with you that the original is better. It would have been fascinating to know had he still been alive what John Wayne thought of it. We will never know but my guess would be very negative!
