As the year comes to end, it is always a time for reflection and to give thought to some of the loved ones and famous names we have lost this year.

The most famous in the UK was the tragic loss of our dear Queen who died in September, the day of my sixtieth birthday.

In the sporting world we have just lost arguably the best football player ever in Pelé. Other notable losses in Sport were England World Cup hero George Cohen, Rugby’s Phil Bennett, Cricket hero Shane Warne, and Horse Racing legend Lester Piggott. For music to name just a very few, we lost Meatloaf, Olivia Newton-John, Terry Hall, and the wonderful Christine McVie.

At the start of the year the whole world mourned the loss of the iconic Sidney Poitier and in the UK one death that touched me a great deal was the loss of comedian Robbie Coltrane. He was also a fine actor and I am currently in the process of re-watching all the episodes of his excellent crime drama Cracker.

As I was perusing the list I realised that we have lost three actors from two of the most iconic gangster films of all time.
